Archaeologist – Cultural Resources Program Support

Department: Environmental and Natural Resources Division (ENRD), Directorate of Public Works


About the Role

DAWSON is seeking a qualified Archaeologist to support Fort Huachuca’s Cultural Resources Program. This position focuses on archaeological resource identification, evaluation, documentation, and compliance in alignment with federal historic preservation laws and Army requirements. The role will also provide project review, technical advice, and support cultural resource management planning.


What You’ll Do

  • Archaeological Resource Management

    • Conduct surveys, inventories, and field assessments of archaeological sites.

    • Document site conditions, cultural features, and artifact collections.

    • Evaluate resources for significance under National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) criteria.

  • Project Review & Compliance

    • Review undertakings for potential effects on cultural resources in compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA).

    • Provide technical recommendations for avoidance, minimization, or mitigation measures.

    • Assist with consultation and coordination with the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO), Tribal representatives, and other stakeholders.

  • Technical Support & Reporting

    • Prepare clear, defensible archaeological reports, site records, and compliance documentation.

    • Maintain and update archaeological databases and mapping systems.

    • Support Environmental and Natural Resources Division (ENRD) staff in integrating cultural resource considerations into planning and operations.


What We’re Looking For

  • Education:

    • Master’s degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, or closely related field.

  • Experience:

    • 2–3 years of professional experience in archaeological fieldwork, survey, and compliance.

    • Knowledge of federal cultural resource regulations (NHPA, ARPA, NAGPRA, NEPA).

    • Experience with NRHP eligibility evaluations and cultural resource documentation.

  • Skills & Competencies:

    • Proficiency in GIS, GPS, and archaeological database systems.

    • Strong technical writing and reporting skills.

    • Ability to work effectively with regulatory agencies and Tribal representatives.

    • Attention to detail and strong analytical skills.


Additional Requirements

  • Must be able to perform fieldwork in varied outdoor conditions.

  • U.S. Citizenship required; must be able to meet Army installation security requirements.

  • Familiarity with Southwest U.S. archaeology strongly preferred.
