Hazmat Operations Instructor

Summary: This position provides services for the Naval Safety and Environmental Training Center (NAVSAFENVTRACEN), Norfolk, VA. Providing instruction for the environmental and emergency response training courses, and student record keeping support typical for educational programs as set forth by NAVSAFENVTRACEN.

Job Description

  • Maintain a high standard of professional qualifications in instructional and technical areas
  • Recommend any changes to the curriculum, if necessary
  • Prepare a personalized Lesson Topic Guide for each subject matter area assigned
  • Maintain qualifications in instructional techniques, training aids, training equipment, training devices and instructional material required to teach assigned topics
  • Prepare the classroom for instruction and ensure classroom is left in an orderly fashion each day
  • Provided remediation for any student demonstrating academic problems at any time in the course
  • Make academic comments concerning students upon request of the appropriate authority
  • Ensure a dignified, harmonious, and professional classroom atmosphere
  • Administer, grade and review examinations, as necessary
  • Report all problem areas related to assigned duties and responsibilities
  • Teach all assigned topics while effectively utilizing allotted time
  • Inventory and account for assigned classroom/lab training equipment, submitting missing item reports
  • Perform operational checks on assigned training equipment, devices, and aids
  • Monitor students to ensure safe usage of all training equipment, devices, and aids
  • Instruct students in operation and safety requirements of shop/lab equipment for trainers
  • Conduct test results
  • Monitor students’ compliance with safety standards/procedures and immediately correct safety violations
  • Assign suitable study procedures to help both failing and non-failing students
  • Ensure any changes in the instructions listed in the topical outline are incorporated into the lesson plans and any corresponding materials provided to the students

Qualifications

  • Must have a four (4) year baccalaureate degree and at least five (5) years of experience in SOH, chemistry, industrial hygiene, environmental engineering, or any combination thereof, OR a two (2) year associate degree with a minimum of seven (7) years of experience in SOH, chemistry, industrial hygiene, environmental engineering, or any combination thereof, OR a minimum of ten (10) years of experience in SOH, chemistry, industrial hygiene, environmental engineering, or any combination thereof
  • Minimum of three (3) years of formal instructional experience (one (1) year of experience equates to a minimum of 160 hours of classroom training time per 12 month period)
  • Minimum one (1) year of aforementioned experience must be in teaching DoD or USCG personnel OR at least three (3) years of active duty in the DoD or USCG with an honorable discharge OR at least three (3) years of work for the DoD/Coast Guard as a civilian employee AND the instructor must have a minimum of five (5) years of experience managing emergency response personnel or working within an ICS or any combination thereof.
